Wildfires are gaining in frequency and intensity. Fire agencies express concern that even now, current methods of wildfire containment are strained while the number of people directly impacted by destructive wildfires is rising. By 2054, experts expect that more than 125 million Americans will be exposed to at least one day of dangerous air quality each year—a 50 percent jump over 2023—and one with dire health and CO2 implications. Climate scientists warn that increasingly frequent and intense wildfires have undone decades of air quality improvement while releasing unprecedented amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
With 18% of 2021 global fossil fuel CO2 emissions generated by wildfires and the 2023 Canadian wildfires emitting over six times the total emissions of the State of California, mitigating emissions from catastrophic wildfires is one of the largest opportunities we have to protect our climate.
-
Research has shown that a 15 minute reduction in wildfire response times could reduce the frequency of large uncontained fires between three and seven percent and generate $3.5 - $8.2 billion in economic benefits for the state of California alone.
And that’s where you come in. Join a nimble team of doers, working every day to bring autonomous rapid response to complement a host of burgeoning firetech ventures—from early detection aided by AI to autonomous robots that aid agencies performing prescribed burns.
